Who should determine whether Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu should contest for the governorship seat in Edo State ? Sentiments or the Nigerian constitution ?

By Besiru Enakhimion.
Of course it is the Nigerian constitution that should determine who is qualified to contest in any election in the country.

The Nigerian constitution permits the Edo Deputy Governor to contest for the governorship seat. So why are some people complaining about the youthful and youth friendly politician in his quest for the governorship seat ?

Some asked why he should seek the governorship seat having been a legislator and Deputy Governor for some years. Such critics seem to have forgotten the importance of experience in governance.

To employ a Chief Executive Officer in a company, applicants who  possess some years of work experience are usually at advantage . In same vein,  possessing experience in governance   should be an advantage for a candidate vying for the governorship seat of a State. Experience cannot be bought but can only be earned. Experience in governance makes the work of the governor easy. Therefore, it is even an advantage for the people of Edo State to have Rt. Hon. Shaibu as governor, having got legislative experience in the state and national assemblies . His experience as a Deputy Governor and an acting governor is also an advantage to him.

Rt. Hon. Comrade Shaibu  has been in the system. In fact, of all the governorship aspirants in  Edo State, he is the only one who has acted as a state governor. Some years ago, he acted as the governor of Edo State when Mr. Godwin Obaseki travelled out on holidays and he performed well. He has got much experience that will aid him to move the State to the next level. He has prepared himself for the job. Like he said earlier, as soon as he is sworn in as the governor of the state, he will also inaugurate his commissioners on the same podium. That is the sign of a man who is prepared to work for his State. Not a governor who will spend six to twelve months to select and inaugurate commissioners. Not a governor who will spend his first term in office learning on the job, studying the problems of the state and not able to proffer the necessary solutions to them.
