The Danger In Fielding An Unpopular Candidate In An Election

By Besiru Enakhimion.

The primary elections of political parties are usually  different from  the main elections.

In the case of primary elections of political parties, the number of voters( the delegates) is usually small and the process of selecting them can easily be compromised or manipulated by party leaders to favour the candidates of their choice. Money and influence of political  godfathers like State Governors and Presidents can aid an unpopular candidate to  fly the flag of a political party.

In the case of the main election, the expected number of voters or electorates is large. It is therefore difficult and in some cases impossible to influence the electorates to vote for any unpopular candidate that has been foisted on any party by his or her godfather.

Imposition of unpopular candidates has done a lot of damages to some political parties in the past.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Edo State  suffered negative consequence of imposing unpopular and unaccepted candidates on the party in the 2023 general elections.

For the first time in the history of the party, PDP, the ruling party in the State, lost the three Senatorial seats in the State. The party only struggled to win a few number of house of representatives seats.

The PDP's primary election to pick a candidate to fly the party's flag in the Edo 2024 gubernatorial election will take place soon. The easiest way for the party to retain the governorship seat is to field a popular candidate, capable of winning the main election. On the other hand, the easiest way for the party to lose in the main election is to field an unpopular candidate foisted on it by a godfather.

PDP in Edo State, be wise. May the humiliating results of the  2023 general elections not be your portion this year.
