Since 2007 when he was elected as a member of Edo State house of assembly, Rt. Hon. Comrade Shaibu has been hosting Journalists in the state to breakfast meetings, in the month of December, annually. In addition to sumptuous foods and drinks the Deputy Governor had also doled out cash to the journalists at such occasion.
He has consistently said his interest for promoting the welfare of Journalists is predicated on the fact that it was a Reporter that published his illegal detention at Gashua Prison in Borno State by the military regime, when as National President of NANS, he led the 'Abacha Must Go' Protest.
According to him, it was the investigation and bravery of the said Reporter, that saved him from the Abacha-led military junta.
