UNHCR intensifies campaign against human trafficking . By Aisha Sambo .


The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has intensified campaign against irregular migration and human trafficking .

In its latest move against the inhuman trade , the international humanitarian organization invited stakeholders to the screening of a film titled, " Dangerous Hope ",at Kada Cinema in Benin City on the 24th of May, 2023 .

The short film, produced by the UNHCR in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Civil Society Organizations, Refugees and other stakeholders was earlier premiered in Abuja on the 2nd of February , 2023 .

The short film is a tool for creating awareness on the dangers in human trafficking and to galvanize stakeholders to take actions that will cumulatively enhance safety and protection of the affected groups in the society .

 "Dangerous hope" is a story of loss, survival and hope . It is about the lives of characters called Mukete and Roseline who escaped the crisis plagued South Western  Cameroun to settle and find safety in Nigeria . It also discloses how they made choices on how to live , having known the risk of human trafficking .

The film also shows how forcefully displaced people lose their community support network and become socially and culturally isolated as a result of quiting their familiar environment . 

In his opening remark, Head , Lagos Field Office,  Mr . Ephraim Kabura , said the short film examines human trafficking in the context of forced displacement and educates by increasing knowledge and awareness in human trafficking .

He thanked the Government ,Ministries, Department and Agencies and appealed to the stakeholders to mobilize support towards addressing the menace of human trafficking as well as contribute towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals .

 The programme featured a panel of discussants who were  engaged in an insightful and productive discussions on the roles and collaboration between various stakeholders on how to curb the menace of human trafficking, for labour, sexual exploitation and organ harvesting which are rampant in the society.

The panelists stressed the need for more enlightenment on the dangers involved in irregular migration and trafficking in persons .

Amongst  the panelists were the Benin Zonal Commander, NAPTIP, Barr. Nduka Nwanwenne , Secretary to the Edo State Taskforce against Human Trafficking (ETHAT), Barr. Itohan , Rev. Fr. Fidelis Arhedo , Chairman of Edo State Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs , Alhaji(Barr.)Nurudeen Asunogie and  representatives of some notable organizations .
